Halloween in Greece

We are already in the middle of Carnival celebrations period and the whole place is flooded with colors and music, dragging people to frantic rhythms of entertainment, relaxation and revelry! In every corner of Greece, unique traditions with references to the years of the Turkish Occupation or even originated by antiquity are revived.

 

Traditional Carnival destination is Patras; rightly characterized as the "Carnaval Town of Greece". The historic Patras’ Carnival includes Bourboulia famous celebration as well as events with dances, parades, treasure hunting and other activities. The festivities culminate on the last week, with two parades. On Saturday night the city is flooded with masquerades who celebrate till morning, while on Sunday noon, the spectacular Great Parade with carnival chariots and crews begins. Colorful chariots and enthusiastic masquerades pour into the streets and lure visitors to the carnival beat and revelry, in a majestic spectacle of images and sounds! After the Great Parade, the spectacular burning of the Carnival King at the port city follows.

 

Another option is Xanthi’s carnival; concerts, theatrical performances, shadow theater, film projections, music events, book presentations, exhibitions, cycling tours, and games on the streets are waiting to take you to a magical world of carefree fun! The feast reaches its pick with the parades during the last weekend. On last Sunday, at Kosinthos river, the traditional burning of Tzaros; a human effigy placed on a pile of bushed, is performed.

 

Equally cheerful is Rethymno Carnival, famous for its Venetian and Renaissance color. The city wears its festive clothes and waits for you to have fun in a wild party! On the eve of the Great Parade, the central avenue of Rethymno turns into a huge dance floor! The carnival becomes one with the guests to an evening full of fun, spontaneity, endless songs and dancing! Carnival celebration ends with the Great Parade and the burning of King Carnival.

 

However, the pulse of the carnival does not only hit in these three cities. In every corner of Greece traditions which have their roots in the past revive. In Macedonia, Kastoria singles with Boubounes celebrations; Kozani with Fanos tradition; Drama with Kalogeros (Monk) and Naoussa with Janissaries and Boules customs. Hiperos celebrates Carnical in the local way; for instance in Ioannina the famous tradition with Jamales revives. In Central Greece, Amfissa singles with its Night Ghosts; Galaxidi with flour war on Clean Monday and Thebes with the Vlach wedding celebrations on Clean Monday. In Karystos, in Evia, the custom of Makarouna while in the neighboring island of Skyros famous for Old Man, Corelas and the Frangos’ disguises are revived. The Ionian islands also give their own mark in the Carnival celebrations, with the characteristic Mask’s Funeral which is revived every year in Zakynthos. In the Peloponnese, the heart of Carnival hits in Methoni, where the custom of Koutrouli marriage revives. In Cyclades, Amorgos stands out with the Captain’s custom while Naxos with Koudounati and Kordelati tradition. From the Dodecanese complex, Karpathos singles out with the festive of People's Court of Immoral Acts; a satirical custom revived every year on Clean Monday.

 

Feast of colors, frantic carnival, satirical chariots and latin music flood all the "corners" of the country, at a party full of fun, passion, creativity and abundance of imagination! Greece is disguised and is waiting for you, to have fun to the Carnival rhythms! You just have to pick a destination and travel in the imaginary world of Carnival...
