Explore Meteora - Kalabaka

Kalambaka is a historic town in the Prefecture of Trikala and lies in the "shadow" of the gigantic rocks of Meteora. It is worth wandering around the alleys of the old city, among the stone houses and the old churches. An important attraction is the historic church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, which was built upon the ancient temple of Apollo and stands below the towering rock of Aea. It is the only Christian church in Greece with marble pulpit in its center. Of great interest is the unique in Greece, Woodcarving School, as well as the Stefanidis Coppersmith; one of the few traditional coppersmiths in the country, where you can buy handmade copper items. During your stay in Kalambaka, it is worth visiting the railway station, built in 1886. In Kalambaka you will find taverns, restaurants and café/bars, as well as the famous tsipouradika (small traditional taverns serving tsipouro) on Vlahava street. Those, who love peace and relaxation, should visit the neighbouring Kastraki village; a small picturesque village ''nestled'' at the foot of the giant rocks, between Kalambaka and Meteora. The image of the houses scattered along the "roots" of the gray-black rocks, seems to have sprung from a painting!

Meteora rocks; a real masterpiece of nature; surround the town of Kalambaka. It is a cluster of massive, dark rocks which pop up from the valley and spread between Koziakas Mountain and Antichasia Mountain range, creating a wild and worldwide unique spectacle! So far the creation of this unique geological phenomenon remains unclear. According to the prevailing theory, the rocks were formed by deposits of a big river; perhaps Aliakmonas River; during the Cenozoic era. It is remarkable, however, that this peculiar geological phenomenon is nowhere mentioned by the ancient historians. It is estimated, that the rocks, until the Roman times, were united together with sand, earth or other materials which, due to rain, tectonic faults or other causes retreated, thus revealing them. Wind erosion, during the following years, led to their current form. On the steep peaks of Meteora, the State of the Eastern Orthodox Asceticism was created. It is the second most important monastic complex in Greece, after Mount Athos, which has been designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nowadays, six of the monasteries have survived intact and still operate. The largest monastery is the one of Metamorfoseos tou Sotira (the Transfiguration of Jesus) or so called the Grand Meteoron, which dominates the tallest and biggest rock named Platis Lithos (Wide Stone). The second largest monastery is the Monastery of Barlaam, which is dedicated to All Saints. Just as impressive is the Rousanos Monastery, which emerges at the top of a steep, vertical cliff. Of great interest is also the Monastery of St. Nicholas the Anapafsas (means resting, as the location of the monastery offers the visitor physical and spiritual reposing), with its famous frescoes. On a majestic, steep cliff, with a stunning view to the town of Kalambaka, the famous Monastery of Agia Triada (the Holy Trinity) lies. In the southern cliff of Meteora the Monastery of Agios Stefanos (Saint Stephen), offering panoramic views of the Thessalic plain lies. Of great interest are also the deserted monasteries, which unfortunately are hard to access. Besides their enormous geological and religious value, the rocks of Meteora make an ideal destination for climbing and hiking.

The town of Kalambaka, which unfolds on the ''foot'' of Meteora, the huge gray-black rocks, rising proudly up to the sky and the magnificent monastic state create a fascinating picture, of almost unearthly beauty, which inevitably causes a strange feeling of serenity, admiration and awe!
