Holidays in Skiathos island
The cosmopolitan Skiathos belongs to the North Sporades complex. Wonderful neoclassical buildings, whitewashed houses with tiled roofs, verandas and flowery courtyards, paved walkways, endless pine lands and dreamy beaches create a magical setting!
The capital and port of the island is Skiathos town, built amphitheater around a small bay, split in two by a small peninsula; Bourtzi. The heart of the city beats in the busy pedestrian Papadiamantis Street, where there are numerous café/bars, taverns, restaurants and shops with souvenirs and gifts. There, the House-Museum of Papadiamantis; a Greek novelist, stands. Along the old and the new harbor, you will find numerous restaurants and café/bars, while at the end of the new port you will find famous night clubs of Skiathos, where the fun goes on until the early morning hours. The most beautiful part of the town is undoubtedly the atmospheric old town, which unfolds in the west end, above the old harbor. Narrow streets, traditional houses, old churches and brightly colored bougainvillea compose the setting of this beautiful state.
Trademark of Skiathos is the full of pine trees Bourtzi; formerly the fortress of the island. Nowadays, from the old fortress only some remains of walls are preserved. Moreover, the old school has been converted into a cultural center, which houses the beautiful summer theater. In Bourtzi, there is also a municipal café where you can enjoy your coffee or your drink, overlooking the magnificent view of the sea.
During your stay in Skiathos, do not forget to visit the castle which dominates the northern part of the island; a landscape of wild natural beauty. There, you will see the remains of the first settlement and part of the wall. Besides its historical importance, the castle offers beautiful views, especially during sunset time.
In the most cosmopolitan island of the Sporades complex, the dazzling green of the pines, the golden sand and the deep blue sea create a set of images of indescribable beauty that will certainly seduce you!
The island is famous for its fabulous beaches, some of which are amongst the most beautiful ones in Greece!
For instance, the beautiful Koukounaries beach; with its sapphire waters and golden sand, iridescent under the sunlight is a place worth spending a day. The beach is embraced by the enchanting forest of pine trees, which almost expands to the sea. If you are a nature lover, do not forget to walk through the woods, where the rare wetland of Strofilia Lake stands out. Within walking distance from Koukounaries are Ambelakia beach, which is ideal for those who love tranquility. Favourite destination of the young is the pinewood and bustling Banana beach, which is located next to Little Banana; ideal for those who prefer quieter environments.
Within an amazing natural environment the beach of Agia Heleni, with pine trees reaching the water, unfolds. If you stay on the beach until the sun sets, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a breathtaking sunset! The beautiful and lively Vromolimnos beach is another favorite choice of the young. Those who prefer more tranquility will fell in love with Mandraki, Elia, Agkistro and the majestic Mikro and Megalo Asselinos beaches.
In addition, Kanapitsa, Vasilias, and Megali Ammos beaches are ideal for families. On the northeastern coast of the island, Lalaria beach is located; a long beach, with round, white pebbles (lalaria), surrounded by white cliffs.
