Holidays in Corfu island
The cosmopolitan island of Corfu belongs to the Ionian complex. The widespread Venetian aura, the charming Old Town, the traditional villages and the stunning beaches with turquoise waters fully justify why the island is annually featured to list with the top summer (and not only) destinations!
Capital of Corfu is the homonymous city, built on the eastern coast of the island. The tour starts in Corfu Square, Spiniada, near, on the west side, the famous Liston street. Here, you can enjoy your coffee or lunch at one of the dozens of café/bars and restaurants housed under the impressive arches.
Reference point in the island's capital is the atmospheric Old Town, which has been characterized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Labyrinthine alleyways, houses with Venetian drawings on the doors and windows, wells, old churches and squares with picturesque cafés create a magical scene, which takes visitors to bygone eras! An important attraction of the Old Town is the church of St. Spyridon.
The Old City is bounded by two forts: the Old, at the eastern side of the town and the New one, in the west. The Old Fortress stands on a rocky peninsula and is separated from the city by an artificial ditch, the Contra Fossa, which has turned the Fortress into an island. To enter into the Fortress, you will have to cross a bridge which connects the city with the island. Within the Old Fortress, beautiful buildings such as the Venetian prison, the English barracks and the military hospital dominate. Your attention will be stimulated by the Doric temple of St. George. From the impressive ramparts, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent views of the Old Town and the deep blue sea!
The New Fortress of Corfu dominates in a prominent position at St. Mark's hill. Inside the Fortress, you will find interesting buildings, such as the Venetian and English barracks and the ammunition depots. From the maximum level of fortification, the Bastion of the Seven Winds, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a unique view that will leave you speechless! If you find yourself on the island at Easter season, from here you can enjoy the spectacular show of fireworks on the night of the Ressurection.
Benchmark of Corfu Island is the legendary Pontikonisi; a verdant rock inside the sea, from which you can enjoy lovely views. Here, the Monastery of Metamorfosis tou Sotiros (Transfiguration), the only building in the island, lies.
To the south of the city, the cosmopolitan Canoni, one of the most beautiful 'corners' of Corfu, unfolds. Canoni offers beautiful views of the airport, Pontikonisi and the islet with Vlacherna monastery, which is joined with by a strip of land. The most ideal time to visit Canoni is at sunset, when the sun sinks into the deep blue waters and the landscape is painted with purple shades!
Corfu is home to several notable museums, including the Archaeological Museum of Corfu, the Asian Museum, Casa Parlante, the Kapodistrias Museum, the Banknote Museum, the Folk Museum in Acharavi, the Museum of the Olive and the Sea Museum.
In addition to the summer season, the island is an ideal destination for Easter: the devout atmosphere, the landscape in spring and the unique traditions, promise visitors unforgettable moments! The most typical Easter celebration takes place on Holy Saturday’s morning: once the bells signal the first resurrection, the locals throw from their windows and balconies clay jugs with water, the so-called bootides. The spectacle is impressive!
The island of Corfu, with its pervasive Venetian aura, its romantic Old Town, its verdant Pontikonisi and its enchanting beaches is a place that will certainly seduce you, whatever time of year you choose to visit it!
On the west coast, you will find the sandy beach of Agios Georgios Pagon, with beautiful, turquoise waters, which is ideal for those who love water sports. On the same side of Corfu, there is the secular and extensive Glyfada beach, the small beach of Myrtiotissa, with its towering cliffs, the beautiful beaches of Paleokastritsa, famous for its caves and the wonderful waters, and Agios Gordios, with its stunning natural scenery and golden sand.
In the northern part of the island, the beach of Agios Spyridon, ideal for families, impresses. The organized Roda and Acharavi beaches impress the visitor as well. Real masterpiece of nature is the famous Canal d'
amour in Sidari, with carved rocks, like sculptures artwork!
On the northeastern coast of Corfu, you will find small, picturesque beaches, like Kouloura and Agni, as well as the crowded beaches of Ipsos and Dassia.
In the southern part of the island, you will find popular beaches in the cosmopolitan resorts of Benitses, Moraitika and Messonghi.
