Holidays in Sikinos island

The untouched island of Sikinos; this special island with the pervasive aura of nostalgia, is lazily perched in the Cyclades complex, between Ios and Folegandros. Chora’s narrow streets, the scattered ancient villages, the beautiful small churches and the quiet beaches with crystal blue waters create a place of breathtaking charm!

Beautiful Chora is divided into two small districts; the Castle and the Village. The Castle refers to the old town. There, time seems to have stopped. The old houses, the flowery gardens and the castle; Chora’s main neighborhood, which dominates the hilltop compose an image which seems to have sprung from a painting! Chora’s major attractions are Pantanassa Church, which is Sikinos metropolis as well as the Church of Panagia Pandoharà; dedicated to the memory of Odysseus Elytis; a Greek Nobel Prize winner in Literature. Also of great interest is the Folklore Museum, located in the Village. In Chora’s square, you will find traditional cafés and ouzo taverns ideal for carefree nights, offering raki with honey or wine.

At Sikinos port, Alopronoia, the small dock, the white houses, the traditional cafés and the small part of road covered with asphalt compose a place which seems to have sprung from the past! Spend some time and have a look at the three windmills which proudly stand at the edge of the settlement. If the weather is good, it is worth making the round of the island of Sikinos by boat which starts from Alopronoia.

During your stay on the island, it is worth visiting the ruins of the ancient city, located in the southern part of Sikinos, promising a magical journey into the past! Opposite to the ruins of the ancient city, the monastery complex of Episkopi stands. This is a particularly imposing monument, as it has parts of Apollo’s ancient temple, Byzantine churches and medieval cells.

If you love adventure, Sikinos, is ideal for hiking on its mountain trails, accompanied by wild herbs and thyme amazing aroma. A major part of Sikinos western side has joined Natura 2000 network, because of its distinct morphology and rare flora. Walk around the island and you will find ancient settlements, unseen beaches, fairy caves and small gorges! You can also discover Sikinos beautiful sea caves like Drakofrydo, Drakontospilies and Mavri Spilià (Black Cave).

This authentic Cycladic island which is characterized until today by its pure charm of a bygone era, promises unique moments of relaxation, rest and calmness!

Beaches

Sikinos has beautiful beaches covering all tastes. Some unfold at the end of a gorge, some beneath cliffs and some are "hidden" in invisible coves. Most beaches are pebbly and only accessible by boats which start from Alopronoia.

Next to the port, you will find the largest beach of Sikinos, Alopronoia. It is organized and because of its shallow waters, it is ideal for families with children. North of Alopronoia, Dialiskari pristine beach, with sand and trees unfolds. At Alopronoia’s southern part you will find the picturesque beach of Agios Panteleimonas. The cave on the beach offers shade to visitors.

On the eastern coast of the island Agios Georgios beach, with thick sand and trees, unfolds.

On the southeastern part of Sikinos there is the small beach of Santorinaika. Pay attention to the small building overlooking the beach, which used to be for loading boats with local goods from Sikinos to Santorini. On the same side of the island, the tiny beach of Agios Ioannis unfolds. There, you will find a well with drinking water. You can access this beach through a path which is relatively difficult.

On the northeast of Sikinos there is the small beach of Malta. It is a unique experience swimming in Mavri Spilià (Black Cave), located on the northern shores of the island. A special proposal is to visit the neighboring islets of Kardiotissa, Kalogeroi and Aderfia, also part of Natura 2000 network.
