Holidays in Kalamata

Charming Kalamata, the capital of the Messinian Prefecture, is built at the foot of Taygetos Mountain, in the "heart" of the Messinian Gulf. Well-preserved neoclassical buildings, palm trees, beautiful squares, paved walkways and a bustling promenade compose the setting of this attractive city.

Kalamata is divided into the Old and the New Town. The Old Town with its houses and ornate balconies, its old traditional coffee shops and cafés, enchants even the most demanding visitor! On the hill above the Old Town, dominates the imposing Frankish castle, where the legendary "Princess Isabeau", the heroin of the homonymous novel by Angelos Terzakis, lived! Apart from its historical value, the castle offers magnificent view. At the southern end, there is a small theater, where, during the summer months, theatrical performances and other cultural events are hosted, whereas around the castle, lies the Old Town, with interesting squares and numerous historical attractions. Do not forget to visit the historical square of March 23rd, which is dominated by the historic Holy Apostles’ Church. According to the tradition, the Greek Revolution of 1821 was declared here on March 23rd. At the "heart" of the Old Town lies the Benaki Archeological Museum, housed within an impressive Venetian type building, as well as the Historical and Folklore Museum, which is housed in the Kyriakou Mansion. The Municipal Gallery, the Military Museum and the Municipal Conservatory are also of great interest.

In the New Town, the coastal Navarino Avenue is a point of reference. Here, you will find numerous cafés/bars, as well as taverns and restaurants. At the "heart" of the New Town lies Aristomenous shopping street, full of stylish cafés and numerous selling stores. Here, the impressive building of the City Hall predominates. Towards the end of Aristomenous Street lies the outdoor train museum/theme-park of Kalamata. The old coaches and engines are perfectly combined with the natural landscape, creating a stunning backdrop, which seems to have sprung from a vintage movie!

In addition, it is worth strolling in Kalamata’s port and take a moment in Teloniou (Customs) Square, dominated by the homonymous administrative building and the Port Authority, reminding the visitor of past eras’ glamour. During your stay in Kalamata, you should visit Verga hill, "Messinia’s balcony", as they call it. It offers a stunning view over Kalamata and the Messinian Bay, while at the same time you will find great places, ideal for a night out.

Kalamata is a city that combines harmoniously sea with mountain, historical past with modern life, romantic "spots" with crowded places, thus making a travel destination, able to satisfy every kind of traveler!

Beaches

Along the Messinian coast, you will find many, beautiful beaches with crystal clear, shallow waters and numerous "virgin" shores. Kalamata’s beach is a long beach that stretches along Navarino Avenue. The colorful umbrellas and palm trees are its hallmark. Kalamata beachfront makes an ideal choice for those wishing to avoid traveling by car. Vrahakia beach is also right next to the old pier in Kalamata, within walking distance.

Eastern of Kalamata are Verga and Almyros bays with their beach bars. Further down the road to Kitries you will find several quiet coves, with fine pebbles and crystal clear waters. Those, who love peace and isolation, will love them! The cosmopolitan Santova beach, about 12 kilometers from Kalamata city, has fine pebbles and thin sand, as well as many beach bars.
