In Milos, within walking distance from Tripiti village, there are the Christian catacombs; an important monument of Christianity. This monument is unique throughout Greece! This is an underground cemetery carved in the rocks. It is believed that the cemetery was the first Christian community of the island. In its original form, the labyrinthine complex consisted of three independent underground galleries and a rectangular burial chamber. Within galleries’ walls carved arched tombs (Akrosolia) are still preserved. Today, only one of the three galleries (the Elders’ Catacomb) is accessible and open to the public.
