Holidays in Samos island
The multifaceted island of Samos is perched in the arms of the Northeastern Aegean Sea; a breath away from Minor Asia. The picturesque fishing villages, the settlements which have something from Epirus’ picturesque villages, the majestic mountains, the fertile plains, the canyons, the sunless caves and the indented coastline make a place totally lovable!
The capital and main port is the city of Samos (Vathi), located in the northeastern part of the island, is divided into Pano (Upper) and Kato (Lower) Vathi. Kato Vathi is the newest part of the town, where beautiful neoclassical buildings and impressive mansions dominate. City’s benchmark is Pythagoras Square with its famous marble lion. The scene changes when approaching the old town, the atmospheric pano Vathi, which is built at the foot of a green hill. There, the traditional houses with the tiled roofs and the enclosed balconies as well as the scenic cafés will take you to bygone eras!
Second largest city and port of Samos is the charming Karlovasi, which is the commercial center of the island. There, you will see the Hegemonic Palace, Hatzigiannio, the Trade School, the Pottery Workshops and the imposing Tanneries. In Karlovasi, at Potami position, following a heavenly hiking route, inside a lush green landscape, you will have the opportunity to admire the natural waterfalls and swim in the river! The experience is sensational!
In the southeastern part of the island, there is the historical Pythagorion village, which was built on the ruins of the ancient city of Samos. On the west side of Pythagorion, the Tower of Lycurgus Logothetis rises, while at the port, you will spot the statue of Pythagoras. It is worth visiting the Archaeological Collection of Pythagorion and the Folk Museum of the Nicholas Demetriou Cultural Foundation. The picturesque port of Pythagorion is ideal for romantic walks, especially during sunset, and is famous for its restaurants, which offer culinary options covering all tastes. Just outside Pythagorion village the remains of the impressive Efpalinio Tunnel dominate while, just eight kilometers away, there is the important archaeological site of Heraion.
During your stay on the island, it is worth visiting the picturesque Kokkari village. The colorful houses, the picturesque port, the beautiful taverns and the stylishly cafés with the colorful chairs create an image which will leave you speechless! If you are on the island on July 24, it is worth attending the celebrations of St. Panteleimon.
Equally fascinating are the mountain villages of Samos. For instance, the village of Vourliotes, perched nonchalantly on the slopes of Ambelos Mount, surrounded by vineyards and lush vegetation. Major attractions of the area are the church of Agios Ioannis and the ruins of Lazarus and Louloudias Castles. Equally beautiful is Manolates village. The old houses, the picturesque taverns, the charming cafés and the small shops emit an aura of bygone eras! One of the biggest villages in Samos is Mytilinii. The colorful houses, the beautiful square with the plane trees and the green slopes compose a picture of unspeakable beauty! There, you will find the Museum of Natural History, with bone fossils of the famous Samokeros dinosaur.
The paradise island of Pythagoras, Aristarchus and Epicurus combines the green of the dense vegetation, the blue of the vast sea and the various colors of the houses, creating a feast of colors, which seems to have sprung from the canvas of an imaginative painter!
The multifaceted character of Samos is also visible to its beaches, as it has diverse beaches, able to satisfy every taste! Near the capital, there is the small Gagos beach.
On the eastern side of the island, Kerveli beach with its turquoise, shallow waters as well as the organized pebble Mycale beach stretch.
In the west coast of Samos, the most pristine beaches unfold. Among them Mikro and Megalo Seitani stand out. Access is relatively difficult, but the wonderful waters, the white pebbles and the "deafening" silence will certainly compensate you! On the western side of the island, you will find other pristine beaches, such as Agios Ioannis Cape and Agios Isidoros.
In the northern part of Samos, unfolds the bustling, organized beach of Kokkari. Near Kokkari, there is the organized Tsamadou beach and Lemonakia idyllic cove. On the north coast of Samos, in front of a green hill, lies River beach; a pebble beach, with crystal clear, icy waters. On the same side of the island, you will find the beach of Livadaki.
On the south coast of Samos, there is the organized Votsalakia beach with colorful pebbles. Also on the south side, Psyli Ammos beach; ideal for families with children because of the shallow waters, unfolds. Another option is the islet opposite Spatharaioi, where there is a beautiful beach with turquoise waters as well as Samiopoula, with white sand and emerald waters.
