The Castle of Methoni

In Messinia, in the beautiful town of Methoni, one of the most important defensive sets of Greece: the Castle of Methoni dominates.

This great castle was built in a strategic position on a rock swelling into the sea, occupying an area of about 93 acres. Both, the 14-arches stone bridge connecting the castle with the mainland as well as the castle gate decorated with elaborate reliefs are impressive. Major attractions, among others, are the ruins of the noblemen Venetians’ homes, the remnants of the Ottoman baths, the Loredan and Bembo bastions, the parts of the Byzantine church of Agia Sophia, and the column of Morosini. From the restored gateway on the seaside, a paved walkway that leads to a rocky island where the famous Bourtzi stands, starts.

Apart from the great historical value, the Castle of Methoni is famous for its breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea and Oinousses island.
